By India Today Web Desk: Mumbai Indians suffered a major setback as their star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 after failing to recover from an injury. Bumrah’s injury (back stress fracture) is more serious than it appeared, and he will miss the majority of the season.
Bumrah, according to sources, is set to undergo surgery to treat his back injury and would need more time to completely recover. The star pacer is likely to miss the entire season of IPL in 2023.
The new season of the IPL will get underway from March 31 and the final will be played on May 28.
This is a major blow for Mumbai Indians as they will be without their premier pacer. Notably, last year, Mumbai Indians missed Jofra Archer after buying the England pacer for a whopping sum of Rs 8 crore. While Archer is expected to make his Mumbai Indians debut in 2023, he is unlikely to partner with Bumrah.
It remains to be seen if Bumrah will be fit for the World Test Championship final, which will be held in London in June. Bumrah was not picked for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to the injury.
Bumrah last played for India in a T20I series against Australia in September of last year before being ruled out of the preceding series against South Africa due to a back injury. He has been out of action since then, missing major events such as the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup.
Previously, the plan was for Bumrah to return to IPL action with the BCCI monitoring his workload, but the board, NCA, and Team India management are now working on a new strategy for his return to competitive action.
After the England tour in July, Bumrah suffered a lower stress fracture for the first time. He then made a brief comeback in September during the home T20I series against Australia, but suffered another back injury and has been out since.
Bumrah’s absence will be a major setback for the Mumbai Indians, who kick off their IPL 2023 campaign on April 2 against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
