Injury issues mount at PSG ahead of Bayern clash, Presnel Kimpembe gets ruled out for the season

Paris Saint-Germain defender Presnel Kimpembe has been ruled out for the season after rupturing his ligament in club’s Ligue 1 match against Olympique de Marseille.

By India Today Sports Desk: Injury issues are mounting at French club Paris Saint-Germain with centre-back Presnel Kimpembe’s season coming to an end after an Achilles tendon injury on Sunday, 26 February.

Kimpembe, one of PSG’s starters will undergo surgery following Sunday’s 3-0 win over Olympique de Marseille in Ligue 1.

With the team set to play Bayern Munich in the Champions League reverse on March 9, this comes as a huge blow to the club, who already do not have Neymar in their ranks. Earlier in February, Neymar was also stretchered off on February 19, and is expected to be out for at least a month.

Kimpembe, who missed the World Cup in Qatar due to a hamstring injury, was stretchered off early in the first half, two weeks after making his comeback from a three-month layoff.

“He will undergo surgery in the coming days,” PSG said in a statement on Monday.

“His season is over,” coach Fabien Galthie said.

Sunday’s victory, in which Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi scored, extended PSG’s lead to eight points. While Mbappe hit the net twice, Lionel Messi scored his 700th club goal, only the second person after Cristiano Ronaldo to achieve the feat. Hopes will be pinned on the striker duo when they try to overturn the 0-1 deficit on Monday,

PSG host Nantes on Saturday in Ligue 1 match.
