By India Today Sports Desk: Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said that his team is on a good pathway and going in the right direction after defeating Newcastle 2-0 to win the League Cup.
Casemiro’s header opened the scoring for United in the 33rd minute at Wembley Stadium before Sven Botman’s own-goal made it 2-0 in the 39th minute. The victory comes after Jose Mourinho in 2017 guided the side to a League Cup and Europa League double.
“Winning a trophy shows that its worth to suffer and sacrifice to give every day your best,” ten Hag said. “If you want to prove something you have to win something.”
Ten Hag also cautioned Manchester United to not get satisfied with the League Cup triumph as satisfaction leads to laziness. “This shows we are on a good pathway and it’s going in the right direction. We will be happy for 24 hours but we will not be satisfied because satisfaction leads to laziness,” he said.
Ten Hag did not waste any time as he guided Manchester United to silverware just 10 months ater being appointed as the manager. The win also keeps alive Ten Hag’s four-pronged challenge, with United in contention for the Premier League title and competing in both the Europa League and FA Cup.
The Manchester United manager further said that the League Cup glory could act as a key for the rest of the season.
“I hope this is a big inspiration, but you can’t look too far ahead,” ten Hag said. “It’s a big win this and we are really happy tonight. Winning breeds confidence as long as you don’t go over the top and keep doing the right things.”
