By India Today Web Desk: Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has heaped praise on new manager Erik ten Hag, saying what he has done in a short time is fantastic. Manchester United beat Newcastle United 2-0 to lift the 2022/23 EFL Cup at Wembley Stadium in London.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Keane said Ten Hag was bought in to rebuild the club and what he has done is such a short space of time is fantastic.
“Erik ten Hag was brought in to try and rebuild the club, get them to compete a bit more. What’s gone on in the last few years, I’ve been really critical, I disliked what they stood for. They weren’t a team, they weren’t together, issues on and off the pitch, but what the manager’s done in a short space of time is fantastic,” said Keane.
He went on to say that Manchester United have recruited very well since Ten Hag came in, adding that they have a spirit within the club now.
“They’ve recruited well, they’ve got a spirit. They weren’t at their best today but they won a football match and the fans appreciate that. There’s a lot of hard work ahead, the players have got to use this as a springboard to get more trophies over the next few years, that’s what it’s about playing for Manchester United,” Keane added.
Casemiro and Marcus Rashford were the scorers for Manchester United in their 2-0 win over Newcastle. Casemiro opened the scoring when he converted a Luke Shaw free kick to head past Loris Karius. The goal stood after a VAR check for offside. Six minutes later, Newcastle conceded again when Rashford’s shot was deflected into his own goal by Newcastle centre-back Sven Botman. United held on to the lead and ran away 2-0 winners.
With this win, Manchester United lifted their first silverware since Jose Mourinho guided them to UEFA Europa League triumph in 2017.
